Debswana Diamond Company is committed to the betterment of the lives of Batswana through its corporate social responsibility initiative.
This came to the fore when the company’s security at Orapa diamond mine in conjunction with contracted security companies; Command Security and Security Services, officially launched income generating projects for Xere and Toromoja communities on Tuesday.
Xere will see an establishment of a brick moulding project, and Toromoja will have a poultry project that will start with 100 layers. Both projects will be run by respective village development committees.
Command Security pledged P35 000 while Security Services pledged P20 000 towards the initiative. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of Debswana securities’ out-reach projects, Orapa mine senior security manager, Mr Posthumous Bolaane said the companies would ensure successful completion of both projects through funding until they were self-sustainable.
Nature of the projects, Mr Bolaane said was informed by consultations with both communities, adding that the idea was to come up with income generating projects beneficial to both communities and future generations. He therefore encouraged the communities to harmoniously work together with Debswana in this initiative for attainment of the intended goal of transforming lives for the better.
Kgosi Molaodi Moipolai of Xere commended Debswana for its philanthropy, adding that the brick moulding project would create employment for the people and also generate revenue for development of Xere.
He also noted that traveling long distances to purchase bricks in Rakops would soon be a thing of the past. Ends
