A 39-year-old man of Machana was on September 25 arraigned before Jwaneng Magistrate Court for the murder of his 31-year-old girlfriend of the same village.
In an interview, Jwaneng police station commander, Supt Thuso Basuti said the man reportedly stabbed the deceased following a misunderstanding on Saturday afternoon.
“According to eyewitnesses, the deceased was in the company of other people when the accused person arrived and a misunderstanding ensued. He is said to have stabbed her with a sharp object suspected to be a knife on the neck, and she was certified dead on arrival at the Jwaneng Mine Hospital,” Supt. Basuti said.
He said even though the man fled the scene after the incident, he was arrested with the assistance of members of the public and had since been remanded in custody and expected to appear for mention on October 9. He added that the incident brought the total number of murder incidents in his policing area to seven since January this year.
“Murder cases are a big concern in our area because this is the seventh incident recorded between January and now,” he said. Meanwhile, Supt. Basuti advised people to ensure their homes and businesses were secured during the Independence Holidays. He also appealed to motorists to ensure that their vehicles were roadworthy and avoid drinking while driving to avoid road accidents.
