Preparations are on course for celebrations of Mater Spei College’s 60th anniversary which will be held next year. Part of the events leading to the big day scheduled for February 9 include a sponsored walk that was held on Saturday and managed to raise P52 000 for the festivity.

Speaking at the end of the walk, chief walker and Francistown District Commissioner, Ms Chabongwa Matseka, applauded the class of 1981 for having mooted the idea of the school’s 60th anniversary. She said the initiative would automatically rebuild and rebrand the school to return to its glory years of being one of the best performing in Botswana.

Ms Matseka urged former students to partake in preparations for the event, adding that Mater Spei College was one of the schools that had shaped the lives of many Batswana. She also commended stakeholders and sponsors for having extended their helping hand beyond their usual mandate.

The School Head, Mr Babuluki Bajiti, explained that the initiative was an ambitious goal for the former and future students of the school, including the community. He said the college was hoping to instill a sense of optimism and excellence in the students to reclaim its glory days and that could only be achieved if the school focused on several areas.

Mr Bajiti said first, the school would need to ensure that its curriculum was rigorous and relevant and that it provided students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed.

“The school will need to invest in its facilities and resources, to create an environment that is conducive to learning,” he said. He explained that currently, the student population had grown tremendously and this called for more teachers and supporting staff.

Mr Bajiti said the school needs specialised labs in order to produce the 21st century learner that the country required for the fourth industrial revolution and transformation from a mineral-based economy to a knowledge-based economy.
