Two primary schools complete

19 Sep 2023

The long awaited two primary schools at Block 6 and Phase 4 in Gaborone are almost complete and ready for occupation, says the Acting Mayor of Gaborone City Council, Mr Oduetse Tautona.

Speaking during the full council session on Monday, he said plans to have the two schools opened and operational, a collaboration between the council and the Ministry of Education and Skills Development were underway.

Mr Tautona said opening of the two primary schools was timely as it met the growing demands of primary education in the city and would alleviate congestion in some of the primary schools in Gaborone.

“Preparations by the education and skills development ministry and the council to hand over the two primary schools are progressing well. The two fully fledged primary schools were constructed through the Economic Recovery and Transformation Plan Strategy (ETTPS) at P160 million.

Mr Tautona further expressed a concern over poor academic performance in some schools saying some of the contributing matters were issues of drug and alcohol abuse.

“This is a serious challenge that calls for a collaboration between parents and teachers to address the matter for improved outcomes,” he said.

On other issues of waste management, Mr Tautona said there was a steady improvement in household waste collection service and this was to due gradual increase in the number of areas outsourced to the private sector.

He said the measure to outsource household waste collection  reduced workload on the in-house waste collection crew from the council but also an employment creation opportunity for those to be engaged by the private sector.

He further said as the council was continuously making efforts to make the environment clean, community participation towards the efforts made were ideal.

He therefore encouraged proper use of litter-management facilities availed in different areas at public spaces. ends
