Youth critical in crime prevention
19 Sep 2023
Youth have been encouraged to be actively involved in crime prevention committees.
The call was made by District No. 17 Officer Commanding, Senior Superintendent Victor Nlebesi at a sports tournament campaign held in Nokaneng on Saturday, targeting youth in the Gumare policing area.
Senior Supt Nlebesi urged the youth to exercise responsibility in leading crime prevention as they were the future of the country.
He said the sports tournament was not only about prizes but was a way of reaching out to youth at sports grounds where they were found in large numbers compared to the dikgotla.
Snr Supt Nlebesi said the initiative was Botswana Police Service’s way of adopting a mind-set change by doing things differently.
In his remarks, Kgosi Kebonyetsala Fish of Nokaneng said that the sports tournament initiative was a welcome development.
Kgosi Fish said it was worrisome that youth were not active in crime prevention committees yet they were the most people negatively affected by crimes such as drug abuse.
He urged youth to be responsible and refrain from crimes like passion killings and murder associated with robbery.
When giving objectives, Assistant Superintendent Jerry Sabata of Gumare Police Station said that the aim of the campaign was to attract youth in crime prevention committees because their representation was low.
Asst Supt Sabata said youth were the most affected by crime as victims becuase they owned gadgets most wanted by criminals. In his vote of thanks, Kgosi Mwakaupi Seemeko of Etsha 6 also Chairperson for Gumare executive crime prevention committee said youth should show responsibility from young age to guard against bad behavior contributing to crimes.
The tournament won by Gumare Social Club was between Social Clubs from Gumare, Nokaneng and Etsha 6. Miss Gumare, Doreen Monnaatshipi, also graced the event and motivated youth to be active in crime prevention. ENDS
