Movement protocol for cloven-hoved animals in place
17 Sep 2023
Mayor of Sowa Town Council, Mr Olifant Mfa has explained that some restrictions on movement of cloven-hoofed animals have been put in place due to the recent sightings of buffalos in the area.
Addressing a full council meeting last week, Mr Mfa said there would be no movement of live cloven-hoofed animals and their products out of Zone 3b (Nata and surrounding villages), Zone 3c (Sowa/Dukwi quarantine surrounding), Zone 5 (Letlhakane area), Zone 6a (Thalamabele/Sese gate) and Zone 8 (Serowe/Mmashoro areas).
He said the movement restriction was a precautionary measure against any likelihood of Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak within these zones.
Mr Mfa also pointed out that the town was experiencing an increase in the number of under-five children with malnutrition as seven children within the town and nine from the surrounding settlements had been registered since the beginning of the year.
He also reported an increase in the incidence of non-communicable diseases, especially hypertension and asthma.
He disclosed that 137 patients had been registered for hypertension and 24 for asthma. Ends
