Maun police are appealing to the public to assist in tracing the mother of a baby boy who’s body was found at a garbage area at River Side ward in Maun.
Maun Police Station commander, Superintendent Dennis Zilawe said in an interview that they received a report from a passer-by who revealed that he was alarmed by some children who were playing in the area and spotted the said baby.
Supt Zilawe said following the report, the police went to the scene and took the body to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital for assessment.
“We suspect that the mother could have secretly given birth and dumped the baby at the garbage area and we are appealing to anyone who has seen a pregnant woman in the area or a woman who appeared to be distressed to come forward,” he said.
Currently the body is awaiting post mortem while investigations continue.
Meanwhile, Maun police are investigating an incident in which a 29-year-old man was found in possession of a green substance weighing 69 grams suspected to be marijuana and a number of sachets suspected to be Methcathinone commonly known as CAT.
The substances, Supt Zilawe said were confiscated during the police patrols, after they stopped the suspect’s vehicle and searched it, only to find the substances.
“The substances have been taken to the forensic laboratory and once confirmed that indeed they are illicit drugs, the suspect will appear before the magistrate to answer for possession of illegal drugs,” he added.
He explained that the police officers also found out that the suspect did not have a driving license and his motor vehicle license had expired.
He said it was really disturbing and painful to watch children trapped in an unpleasant way of life that will lead them to nowhere.
Parents, he said, should engage their children and educate them about the consequences of drugs as well as play a key role in facilitating behaviour change. Ends
