President Masisi heads to Mozambique

President, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi will today (June 23) attend the closing ceremony of the Disarmament and Demobilisation Phase (DDR) Process in Maputo, Mozambique.
A Press Release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that the ceremony initiated in 2019, was to disarm and integrate Movement for National Resistance of Mozambique (RENAMO) ex-combatants, following the signing of the 2019 Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement.
The release states that Botswana has also headed the International Military Observer Mission on the Cessation of Military Hostilities in Mozambique (EMOCHM), in 2014 under the leadership of Brigadier Therego Seretse.
It also says that Botswana supports the Mozambique peace process which included active participation by the late former President, Sir Ketumile Masire who was part of the international mediators’ team for the 2016 political dialogue between the government of Mozambique and RENAMO.
Botswana is also part of the International Contact Group that was responsible for overseeing negotiations that led to the signing of the 2019 Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement, the release further reads.
Accompanying President Masisi are ministers Dr Lemogang Kwape of Foreign Affairs, Mr Kagiso Mmusi of Defence and Security and other senior government officials. Ends
