Maun Police investigate rape

12 Apr 2023

Maun police are investigating a rape incident which took place over the Easter holidays.

Senior Superintendent Onious Madziba said the suspect allegedly forced entry into the house of a  27-year-old woman in the early hours of Sunday while she was sleeping.

The suspect, he said, allegedly raped the victim and fled the scene. The victim later reported the matter to the police. He appealed to the public to help them with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect.

Senior Superintendent Madziba noted that incidents of rape were increasing in his policing area and that they mostly occurred when people were returning from entertainment centres.

He said they would do all in their power to ensure the perpetrator was arrested.

On other issues, Senior Superintendent Madziba said they registered a fatal accident in which a 28-year-old woman lost her life while the driver sustained  serious injuries.

He said the accident occurred along the Maun-Francistown road, adding that it was suspected that the driver lost control of the vehicle as it veered off the road and overturned several times.

He noted that the vehicle had two passengers and was heading to Maun.

Senior Superintendent Madziba also said they charged a young man over P4 000 for driving without a licence, reckless driving, failure to comply with police signals and deficits in his vehicle. Despite the two incidents, Senior Superintendent Madziba said they had peaceful and quiet Easter holidays although Maun hosted big events which attracted many people from all over the country.

He noted the Polo Affair Horse Race and music festivals in various areas.

“Prayers and our visibility worked wonders as we did not record any serious incidents such as murder, criminal offences and traffic fatalities except the one I have already mention,” he said. ENDS
