Gumare Police are investigating an incident in which a middle-aged man shot and killed a 72-year-old woman before committing suicide at Etsha 6 in the Okavango District.

Officer commanding, Senior Superintendent Victor Nlebesi confirmed the incident in an interview, noting that the old woman of Mabudutsa ward was shot on Sunday between 8 and 9pm while the suspect turned the same gun on himself Monday (10 April) when police officers approached him at his homestead.

Narrating the ordeal, he explained that the deceased man went to the old woman’s place looking for his girlfriend who was not home at the time.

When the old woman informed him that his girlfriend was not home, the deceased allegedly ran to his car, took out a gun and shot her before disappearing.

He said the police searched for the man and found him at his place on Monday morning and when they approached him, he turned the gun on himself.

“The incident had shocked us. Investigations are ongoing to find out what could have triggered this,” said Senior Superintendent Nlebesi

In another incident Sepopa community are reeling in shock, after a 94-year-old woman of Kgosing ward was found dead at her homestead on Sunday.

Senior Superintendent Victor revealed that they received a report from her neighbours who were alerted by a passer-by after seeing the deceased lying down in the scorching sun.

The passer-by is said to have approached her but the deceased could not respond and neighbours were alerted. The woman was rushed to the hospital where she was certified dead.

Police investigations were ongoing to establish the cause of her death.

Besides the incidents, Senior Superintendent Nlebesi said they had a peaceful Easter Holidays and thanked Okavango community for their cooperation.

He attributed the low level of incidents to police patrol operations conducted prior and during the holidays. Ends
