Selibe-Phikwe urged to be ready

The chairperson of Selebi-Phikwe Party Liaison Committee (PLC), Mr Letshwao Mogorosi has urged political parties and other stakeholders to help mobilise the community participate in the upcoming demarcation of polling districts and establishment of polling stations in the town.
“Once the demarcation committee consultations start you are expected to make submissions to the committee to decide on your polling districts,” he informed the members of the PLC on Thursday.
Mr Mogorosi who is also the chairperson of the demarcation committee in Selebi Phikwe said currently the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), which was spearheading the process, would be appointing other members of the committee, after which it would conduct trainings.
He said once the exercise started, consultations would be conducted at Kagiso, Ikageleng and Botshabelo customary courts. IEC’s Principal Elections Officer, Mr Lesang Molome said Selebi Phikwe currently had 14 polling districts or wards, seven in each constituency.
He said polling districts and stations would be gazette once the demarcation exercise was complete.
Mr Molome added voter registration would follow once the whole process of demarcation of polling districts was complete.
Political parties’ representatives thanked the PLC and pledged their support.
The last delimitation exercise determined that Selebi-Phikwe constituencies would remain two.
The town’s population dropped from 48 000 in 2011 to 42 000 in 2021 due to the closure of the BCL mine as some people relocated to other places. Selebi-Phikwe East has a population of 20 902 whilst Selebi-Phikwe West has 21 729 people. ENDS
