Ramotswa Police Station is overwhelmed by cases of possession of illegal had habit forming drugs.
Since 2021 to date, Ramotswa police have arrested 187 people for possession of illegal drugs.
Officer Commanding No.13 District, Senior Superintendent Agreement Mapeu said 90 per cent of those arrested were Batswana, comprising 74 males and 12 females aged 21-40 years.
Snr Supt Mapeu was officiating at the recent anti-drug community policing workshop organised by Ramotswa police, the main aim being to sensitise the community about the major challenges that illicit drugs presented to the society.
Snr Supt Mapeu said the arrested individuals were in possession of illicit drugs such as dagga (motokwane) and cocaine.
Mr Mapeu has also revealed that when addressing issues of drug abuse, gender-based violence (GBV) will always be a factor to consider.
He said investigations in cases of GBV had shown that most of the perpetrators in GBV cases were on drugs.
Therefore Snr Supt Mapeu said fighting social ills would be a tall order as long as the use of illicit drugs was rampant in the society.
He said the use of illicit drugs fueled social ills.
Meanwhile, Ramotswa Police Station Commander Superintendent Keoagile Tau said that the workshop was prompted by high and increasing usage of illicit drugs in the Ramotswa policing district. Ends
