Authorities issue Cyclone Freddy overflowing dams alerts

Chobe and Ngamiland are expected to feel the effects of Cyclone Freddy tomorrow.
The vert intense tropical storm was anticipated to pass through the eastern coast of Madagascar yesterday moving into the Mozambican channel tomorrow thereby affecting north western Botswana.
A Department of Meteorology official, Ms Alice Oabile, said the cyclone was later expected to make landfall over western Mozambique and eastern Zimbabwe.
Its effects would be felt in the Chobe and some parts of the Ccntral District, she said.
Meanwhile, Water Utilities Corporation‘s (WUC) has warned that most of the country’s dams are full and over spilling saying with more downpours expected as a result of Cyclone Freddy, there is likelihood of flooding downstream.
In a media release, the corporation warns members of the public residing in the periphery and downstream of dams such as Dikgatlhong, Bokaa and Nnywane to exercise caution as they are now over flowing.
Dikgatlhong Dam level increased to 103 per cent this week from last week’s 95.6 per cent, Bokaa Dam is at 105 per cent compared to last week’s 98.4 per cent while Nnywane Dam stands at 102 per cent against 93.5 per cent recorded last week.
The release says generally, most of the country’s water supply systems are on an upward spiral with reservoir levels reaching 105 per cent this week compared to 98 per cent last week.
Letsibogo Dam increased by 6.8 per cent this week and is now at 90 per cent while Gaborone Dam has jumped from last week’s 55.2 per cent to the current 71 per cent. ENDS
