12 Feb 2023
President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has urged Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) members to submit themselves to the rules and structures of the party.
Addressing democrats in Nlapkhwane on Friday, he said it was imperative that whoever the party elected as a candidate for bye elections was a disciplined cadre who would advance the interests of the people. The remarks were subsequent to the recent passing of Nlapkhwane/Mapoka ward councillor, Mr Farayi Bonyongo.
President Masisi called on members to dedicate themselves to the BDP and avoid cases that could cause conflict within the party.
“Do not offend people especially using your financial power to abuse those who may be less fortunate. We can’t allow that in BDP.”
He said the party needed strong and capable candidates.
Dr Masisi highlighted that BDP respected democracy, which was why they had acceded to a motion in Parliament from opposition to introduce mother tongue in primary schools. He highlighted that though the party MPs had rejected the initiative in the past, they now believed it was the right time to adopt it. ends
