Monageng new high commissioner to South Africa

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has appointed Dr Sanji Monageng as high commissioner-designate to South Africa.
Judge Monageng, who takes over from Ms Tshenolo Modise, has a wealth of experience in international law having served at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
At the ICC, her roles included serving as the Appeals Division judge (2012-2018) and as the court’s first vice-president (2012-2015), covering crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide.
During her tenure with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Dr Monageng championed human rights issues as a member (2003-2009) and chairperson (2007).
Most recently, she served as a judge with the SADC Administrative Tribunal, including holding the position of president last year and vice president (2020-2022).
Dr Monageng is recognised nationally and internationally for her contribution to the promotion of human rights, the rule of law and international justice.
She has received a number of awards including the Human Rights Award from the International Association of Women Judges in 2014 and the Presidential Order of Honour the year before.
Her other international assignments include serving in the high courts of The Gambia and Eswatini, United Nations Observer Mission to South Africa as well as being seconded to the law societies of England and Wales and Zimbabwe.
She is a member of the International Commission of Jurists, International Commission on Missing Persons and International Association of Refugee Law Judges. Ends
