Nip youth violence in the bud - police

09 Jan 2023

Collaborative efforts are key in moving to avert an imminent wave of teen violence, particularly murder among young lovers.

Takatokwane police’s acting station commander, Assistant Superintendent Jacob Molapong said this in an interview following an incident where an 18-year-old young man killed his 17-year-old girlfriend recently.

“We are worried about incidences of murder where young people kill one another over misunderstandings in their relationships. It is worrisome that such incidences tend to occur intermittently in each village and this calls for concerted efforts to bring the matter to a stop,” Assistant Supt Molapong said.

On the murder incident that occurred on the wee hours of January 1, he said preliminary investigations had revealed that the 18-year-old hit his girlfriend with an iron rod on the head over suspicions that she was cheating on him.

However, Assistant Supt. Molapong said the young man, who had already appeared before a magistrate, had been remanded in custody while investigations continued.

Meanwhile, Assistant Supt Molapong said they had not recorded any other crime incidents over the festive season save for the murder incident.

He, therefore, applauded residents of his area of jurisdiction for their good behaviour and for refraining from criminal activities. ends
