Police in Maun are investigating an incident in which a 37-year-old woman died during an alcohol competition over the holidays.
Assistant Superintendent Kgakgamatso Koboyatshwene confirmed the incident in an interview, noting that the deceased and her friends had organised an alcohol competition at Botshabelo ward on January 2.
He said the group was allegedly drinking whiskey. The deceased later collapsed and remained motionless on the ground while the competition continued. He said the deceased’s brother rushed her to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital where she was certified dead.
In other news, ASP Koboyatshwene said a 31-year-old man of Sedie ward was found hanging from the rafters of his house on the eve of New Year.
He said the deceased was found by a passerby who alerted neighbours who eventually reported the matter to the police.
In Sehithwa, police arrested two suspects; a 27-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, in connection with a murder incident involving a 37-year-old man of Kareng. ASP Moutlwatsi Ikobeng of Sehithwa said the deceased was found lying unconscious in the street with serious injuries in the early hours of January 1.
Some residents, he said, reported the matter to the police, who found the deceased motionless and rushed him to Letsholathebe hospital where he was certified dead. The police, he said, suspected that perpetrators could have assaulted the deceased with a hard object.
ASP Ikobeng said some reports had indicated that the deceased had a misunderstanding with his ex-girlfriend and her neighbour tried to intervene, unfortunately the deceased ended up fighting with the said neighbour.
in another matter, ASP Ikobeng also said a 38-year-old man of Botlhatlogo was in a critical condition at Letsholathebe hospital after he sustained head injuries during a fight.
Preliminary investigations, he said, indicated that the victim was trying to rescue his sister who was assaulted by her boyfriend. The accused reportedly hit the victim with a knobkerrie on the head leaving him with serious injuries. Ends
