Beware of fraudsters - police

15 Dec 2022

Botswana Police Service (BPS) has warned the public about incidents where criminals use various methods to rob people of their money and property.

A press release from the police says criminals cover up as employees of certain companies and utility parastatal organisations. They claim to carry out maintenance work, only to steal from their victims who would have not suspected anything.

“Investigations have revealed that in some instances, criminals present themselves dressed in uniform resembling certain companies and utility parastatal organisations,” the release says.

It also says Broadhurst police are investigating an incident where a company was, on December 11, robbed of cash and property by three unknown men who impersonated one of the private security companies.

In yet another incident that occurred on December 13 in Gaborone, seven unknown men, some of which were posing as security guards, allegedly attacked and robbed employees of a certain office of cash of various currencies, bank cards and laptops.

The release further says due to intensity of the festive season, the police suspect that criminals may continue to apply various tricks to pounce on innocent people.

“Therefore various communities across the country are advised to be on the lookout for these criminals as it has proved that they are capable of any possible stunt that can deceive the would-be victims,” the release says.

The public is therefore advised to always assess the authenticity of the information provided by people they are dealing with and demand any form of identity.

It is also urged to be on guard against such criminals and report to the nearest police station when in doubt. ends
