Afro Kwasa Stars shines

13 Nov 2013

A Letlhakane-based youthful, energetic and talented Kwasa kwasa dance group continues to make a name for itself in the music industry through its sterling performances.

Afro Kwasa Stars, formed in 2005 by a group of four talented young men, also emerged victorious at My African Dream under the senior category as they were the viewers’ favourite group. They received a certificate at the awards ceremony held at Gaborone on October 25, 2013.

The group’s leader, Million Leiri has described their dominance at My African Dream finals as a sign of growth in their music career. He said the road to My African Dream finals started in 2012, where they went all the way up to the semi-final stage. Leiri said their recent win never came as a surprise as they had prepared well for the competition and also staged sterling performances for the viewers’ satisfaction.

He said the group was working on a victory celebration to be held before the end of the year adding that the event will also be used to launch some new future projects and even appreciate the support they had received from the community of Boteti.

“The victory means a lot to us, as group and the community of Boteti as a whole as we are the only group from the sub district to contest and even emerged victorious.

We fully appreciated the support from the Boteti business community, as we made it to the finals through their undivided support,” he said. He said their aim was to engage other local artists and DJs well known in the music industry to give back to the community.

Leiri said as a dance group, Afro Kwasa Stars performs all type of music and more focused on Kwasa Kwasa. He said even though striving for success and growth, the group is handicapped by financial constraints. “We are working under difficult conditions but through the grace of God, we managed to excel,” he said.

He said the group performs in music festivals and charitable events in collaboration with other local artists.   Leiri said currently, the group is working on an album to unleash their talent vocally.  The album, he noted, will prepare the group towards participating in President’s holiday arts and music competitions in 2014.
