02 Nov 2022
Employers have been challenged to promote a healthy lifestyle in the workplace given the modern work trends of less physical activity, but more time behind a computer and sitting at a desk.
Speaking during a wellness day activity organised by the Department of Facilities Management in Mahalapye on Tuesday deputy district commissioner, Mr Edson Malebane, commended the department saying it demonstrated a paradigm shift in the welfare of the workers by embracing the concept of wellness day.
Mr Malebane said the theme: Towards a Healthy Workforce, confirmed that solutions to health problems were not in medical centres or chemists, but in one’s hands.
He urged the department to join hands with other stakeholders in the Mahalapye Sub-district to come up with a bigger event that would contribute positively to the Global Wellness Day objectives.
“I wish to point out that at national level, government is taking the workers’ wellness, welfare and security with utmost seriousness,” Mr Malebane said.
The department’s wellness committee chairperson, Mr Simon Tlhalerwa, mentioned the objectives of the day were to encourage good health among workers and to also encourage the spirit of teamwork.
When giving words of encouragement occupation health officer from the department’s headquarters, Ms Tuelo Maitseboa, said COVID-19 showed everyone that keeping fit was really important.
She also encouraged those who were retiring to continue exercising at home to stay healthy. ENDS
