BPC hands over refurbished library
23 Oct 2022
Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) has handed over a refurbished and fully furnished library to Kavimba primary school, in the Chobe enclave. The corporation also sponsored the school’s prize giving ceremony.
Speaking at the handing over and prize giving ceremony in Kavimba Friday, BPC Chief Executive Officer, Mr David Kgoboko said through the companies’ corporate social responsibility BPC demonstrated kindness and compassion to the community.
He said the refurbishment of school library would ensure friendly and conducive environment to learning while prize giving would celebrate good performance and inculcate the spirit of learning among the learners.
Mr Kgoboko urged parents and the community to continue taking keen interest in education.
He said BPC had been assisting Kavimba primary school since 2018 and it was the corporation’s dream to expand the relationship to other schools around the country, resources permitting.
Munitenge Lawrence Sinvula III of Kavimba called on parents to work together with teachers towards education of their children.
He applauded BPC and other donors for the good gestures especially at a difficult time when companies were recovering from the impact of COVID-19.
Munitenge Sinvula III said the library contributed to education development as it had positive learner impact because some pupils preferred learning alone.
He encouraged prize winners to do more and those who did not get prizes not to despair but work hard.
The School head, Mr Mozimeni Mokoti said BPC had previously donated solar backpacks to learners who did not have electricity at their homes.
He said he trusted the bags made an impact as the school maintained over 85 per cent performance except in 2021 where it dropped to 77.6 per cent. Mr Mokoti attributed the decline in performance to COVID-19.
He said BPC donation was in line with Knowledge Based Economy and Vision 2036 pillar of human development. Mr Mokoti said human development was about developing people intellectually.
Speaking on behalf of Council Secretary, Ms Rosinah Maoba from Chobe District Council applauded BPC for refurbishing the library saying one significant thing about it was that it would help children research on their own.
Ms Maoba said the council provided infrastructure but due to shortage of funds it could not afford other developments and gestures by stakeholders such as BPC were welcome in complementing the council’s efforts.
At the same event Prince Maplanka and Tebogo Chihope were awarded the prizes for the best overall in standard six and seven respectively. Prizes for different subjects as well as the best employees and PTA member were awarded. Ends
