Residents propose Ngwaketse East constituency

20 Oct 2022

Residents of some villages east of Kanye have suggested that their areas should be removed from Kanye North to form a new constituency.

In a kgotla meeting addressed by the Delimitation Commission in Ntlhantlhe on Tuesday, residents proposed that the new constituency should be called Ngwaketse East.

They suggested that the boundary should start at Losabanyana near Kanye and extend eastwards to Moshana, Ranaka, Lekgolobotlo, Ntlhantlhe, Magotlhwane, Kgomokasitwa, Pitsaneng, Seno, Bikwe, Mogonye and Manyana.

Mr Ronald Moshaga, who spoke on behalf of Ntlhantlhe residents said their villages suffered from inadequate services and developments under Kanye North.

“We want a stand-alone constituency so that there can be improvement in terms of services and developments coming to us,” he said.

On behalf of Lekgolobotlo residents, Mr Motshegetsi Makwa said the population of villages on the eastern side of Ga Ngwaketse had increased, hence the need for a new constituency.

Mr Thuso Phiri and Ms Goutlwamang Gaemengwe of Magotlhwane and Kgomokasitwa respectively agreed that their villages should be moved from Kanye North and be grouped into a new constituency.

“Sharing an MP with Kanye has disadvantaged other villages,” they said.   However, Mr Mooketsa Magosi from Ntlhantlhe said Kanye North should be left as it was.  He said the constituency was not big and it was easy for the MP to consult with the constituents.

“The interaction of communities in Kanye North is also easy because the villages are close to each other. I cannot see any reason why this constituency should be divided,” he said.

Delimitation Commission member, Mr Maotoanong Sebina, pointed out that the population of Kanye North constituency had increased from 34 181 to 35 598.

Mr Sebina said factors considered when realigning constituencies included the population threshold, vastness of the constituency, terrain or geographical features, communications means such as roads infrastructure, population density, district boundaries, and natural community of interests such as cultures, traditions, practices and languages.

The current population threshold for a constituency in Botswana was 38 682 people, he said. BOPA By Jeremiah Sejabosigo
