Roads to be rehabilitated this year - MP
19 Oct 2022
Some roads linking villages in the Ngami constituency will be rehabilitated before the end of the year, Ngami Member of Parliament, Mr Caterpillar Hikuama has told Kareng residents.
Addressing the residents during a kgotla meeting, he said he was concerned about the terrible state of roads in Ngami and that he recently engaged the relevant minister, who promised improvement of some of the roads before end of the year.
Mr Hikuama promised to follow up on the issue as the rainy season was approaching, adding that rain would exacerbate the situation
He cited gravel roads that connected the villages of Nokaneng-Dobe, Tsau-Semboyo, Habu and Makakung-Kareng, among those that needed to be rehabilitated.
On other issues, the MP called on residents to take the education of their children seriously and work hard to improve the learners’ performance.
He said achieving academic excellence required a collective approach by all stakeholders.
Mr Hikuama and called on village leadership, the community and other stakeholders to come on board and support schools.
“The low level of learner performance is worrying and we should show interest to ensure this state of affairs is not allowed to continue. We should support our children’s studies and shape their future,” he added.
Mr Hikuama explained that education was key to success, saying that it could help make the world a better place and allow learners to turn their dreams into reality.
To promote academic excellence in his constituency, the MP has pledged a floating trophy which would be awarded to best performing primary and secondary schools.
The trophy, he said would enhance learning and teaching as well as cultivate the spirit of competition amongst schools hence improve performance.
In his welcome remarks, Kgosi Malebogo Mhapa of Kareng had said the state of the roads needed urgent attention and also decried shortage of water in the village.
An official from Water Utilities Corporation, Mr Mokeresete Ramontsho attributed the water shortage to the inefficiency of Semolo reverse osmosis plant, which he said was old and frustrated efforts to supply water as expected.
The plant supplies Bothatogo, Kareng, Sehithwa, Bodibeng, Legotlhwane and Toteng.
Mr Ramontsho noted that the plant was designed to pump 1080 litres of water a day but it was currently producing only 768 litres.
Vandalism of water infrastructure, he said also exacerbated the situation, fingering some members of the community, who he said destroyed pipes to water livestock.
Mr Ramontsho, however said efforts were underway to rehabilitate the plant as funds had been secured and tendering process was ongoing. ENDS
