Gaborone Institute of Health Science (IHS) class of 2021/23 has refurbished and enhanced recreation facilities for SOS village.
Speaking at a ceremony to hand over the donation, Mafitlhakgosi Clinic matron, Ms Anita Moseki applauded the Family Nurse Practitioner programme (FNP) 2021/23 for finding it fit to give back to SOS community.
The ceremony that aimed to amplify health and wellbeing at Tlokweng SOS Children’s Village was witnessed by SOS elders, village elders, IHS management and Tlokweng community.
“This event does not only bring us closer to achieving our national vision of a healthy nation but also brings us closer to improving access to health services globally.
Therefore, it is in accordance with Sustainable Development Goal number 3 of good health and wellbeing which ensures healthy lives and promotes the wellbeing for all at all villages” said Ms Moseki.
She said the initiative came at a time when child health was a priority and also aimed to bridge identified health promotion gaps.
The initiative to refurbish and enhance recreational facilities at SOS village by FNP students is a welcome development as children will have something to keep them occupied and allow for interactions with other children and family members.
The matron stated that the facility would also avail a stimulating atmosphere that would help the children cope with their varied circumstances that brought them to SOS village.
She further said that literature showed that regular physical activity could help children and adolescents improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, reduce depression and reduce the risk of developing health conditions as heart diseases, cancer and type 2 diabetes.
Receiving the donation SOS director, Mr Kabelo Tshimologo guaranteed that they would put the facilities to good use and would also improve children’s health.
Mr Tshimologo explained that the SOS children’s village was an independent non-governmental and non-profit organisation that provided humanitarian and developmental assistance to children in need and protected their interests and rights around the world.
He noted that the village had more than 130 children. this donation, she said would make an impact on all of them.
Mr Tshimologo appreciated FNP students for the gesture and appealed to other organisations and stakeholders to come on board and assist SOS community. BOPA
