Two residents call for Ghanzi North division
13 Sep 2022
Two residents made oral submissions calling for the re-drawing of Ghanzi North constituency boundaries with consideration to spilt it into two.
Making presentations during a Delimitation Commission meeting in Kuke on Monday, former councillor for Kuke area, Mr Monwe Monwela suggested that some villages from Ghanzi South that were served (administratively) by Ghanzi East Sub-council should form part of Ghanzi North.
Mr Monwela cited that Bere, Kacgae, East Hanahai, West Hanahai and New Xade villages as those that should be part of Ghanzi North as they were served by the sub-council that fell within Ghanzi North.
He also argued that both bad terrain and communications at CKGR settlements like Mothomelo and Molapo should be some basis for dividing Ghanzi North into two.
Another resident, Mr Thebe Tlotlegang shared similar sentiments that the constituency should be redrawn and divided to enable the Member of Parliament to serve the people better as the constituencies would be more manageable.
He said owing to the under construction Sandfire’s Motheo copper mine, the population of Ghanzi North was anticipated to grow, hence the need for the constituency to be divided.
Earlier, Delimitation Commission member, Mr Maotoanong Sebina, said other factors besides population quota, were taken into consideration during the delimitation process.
He cited natural community of interest, means of communication, geographical features as well density of population.
The public was advised of the opportunity to make written submissions to the delimitation secretariat at Private Bag 00284, Gaborone or email to delimitation@gov.bw or send their submissions through the district commissioner’s or IEC offices. Ends
