Teachers welfare important- Vice President

11 Sep 2022

Teachers’ welfare issues need to be addressed for the country to realise good results, Vice President, Mr Slumber Tsogwane said when touring schools in Khumaga, Rakops and Orapa on Thursday.

The Vice President stated that teachers based in rural areas should be promoted like those in urban areas, and their accommodation challenges addressed.

Mr Tsogwane said teachers based in rural areas should also be allowed an opportunity to serve in towns and not have to endure rural life alone lest they felt neglected.

The Vice President said it was important to have happy and motivated public officers hence all should be taken on board the country’s quest to transform to a knowledge based economy.

He encouraged teachers to assume the responsibility of upgrading their skills.

Mr Tsogwane urged those in charge to address overstays, adding that government was against separating married couples.

He said those tasked with filling vacant posts in schools but failing to do so would be taken to task.

The Vice President said maintenance of teachers’ houses, hostels, classrooms and other facilities was important in boosting morale but acknowledged the inadequacy of resources while pleading for commitment with hope that resources would follow.

He advised school management to empower locals by engaging them when carrying out minor maintenance works. ENDS
