GoodhopeMabule to get potable water

08 Sep 2022

Good Hope water master plan will ensure that Good Hope/Mabule residents get  enough potable water.

The residents, who have been grappling with shortage of water for a long time, made a sigh of relief when the Minister of Lands and Water Affairs, Mr Kefentse Mzwinila performed a ground-breaking ceremony for the water master plan works in Mabule and Metlojane. He said the sub-district required at least 0.6 milliliters of water per day, but it had been receiving only 0.45 milliliters, an indication of acute shortage of water.

Dr Mzwinila said water was the mainstay of every development, adding that for locals to have proper houses they needed it for construction, for industries to be established water must be there.

The minister said the construction of a reservoir in Lobatse, which would get water from the north-south carrier 1, was envisioned to be finished by the end of this year.

The works of the said project, which started in May, and are valued at over P823 million, are expected to take 16 months to complete.

Dr Mzwinila urged the contractors to try their best to finish the job on time and within budget, while at the same time they ensure quality work.

Dr Mzwinila urged the local contractors, who had been given a 40 per cent stake in each of the two phases of the project, to cooperate with local authorities.

For his part, the area Member of Parliament, Mr Eric Molale, advised the residents to use water sparingly and avoid watering animals on homesteads.

He said water must be used sparingly, warning that otherwise users would incur high bills.

Mr Molale thanked the locals for their patience, saying even though the project took a long time to be implemented, it was now work in progress.

The legislator implored companies that won the tender to exercise social responsibility by doing something for their host communities before they left site. ENDS
