01 Sep 2022

Soldiers whose personal belongings were destroyed when the Botswana Defence Force’s (BDF) 100 Man Barracks was gutted by fire Monday will be compensated.

This was said by President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi during a visit to the scene yesterday.

He assured the affected soldiers that they would be compensated appropriately and accordingly.

The President further assured BDF of his support and that of government to rebuild the barracks.

Calling the incident unfortunate, Dr Masisi stressed the need for improved structures.

He called on  BDF commander Lt Gen Placid Segokgo to ensure maintenance of military quarters and houses.

The President advised the army to utilise construction equipment at its disposal for undertaking maintenance works to enhance dignity.

Lt Gen Segokgo expressed gratitude for President Masisi’s visit saying they were motivated to see their commander-in-chief showing concern and support.

He explained that while there were no causalities in the incident, occupants lost personal belongings.

General Segokgo said BDF would provide necessary support to the affected soldiers.

It would also invest in proper sustainable structures for them, he said.

General Segokgo said the over 20 years old barracks were built as convenient accommodation for soldiers.

He said investigations into the cause of the fire were ongoing. Ends
