Cultural events give sense of pride identity- official

30 Aug 2022

Hosting cultural events is important as it affords locals an opportunity to embrace and showcase their diverse culture, heritage and traditions for posterity, the chief organiser of Mokoto wa Lesoso, Mr Kennedy Babusi has said.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, about the origins of Shoshong’s annual Mokoto wa Lesoso cultural event, Mr Babusi said “our main goal in coming up with this annual cultural event was to promote and preserve Shoshong people’s history and culture, by showcasing our traditions, food, attire and traditional games and also promote a sense of cultural identity within our community.”

“This year’s event marked the sixth edition of Mokoto wa Lesoso, which has now become the pride and joy of Shoshong people, as it also gives them the sense of cultural identity,” he added.

The event’s name: Mokoto, he said was derived from a traditional dish, which was a delicacy, made from cow’s sirloin that Batswana men were treated to during traditional events.

Besides being a cultural event, Mr Babusi said Mokoto wa Lesoso was also a leisure activity with an important social feature of bringing people together in a more relaxed environment to appreciate cultural diversity.

To prevent people from driving from one venue to another, as well as to avoid road accidents, this year’s edition hosted both the main day event and the after party in one venue at KD Farm Garden in Shoshong.

Attendees were treated to Setswana cuisine, traditional music, dance and games. Ends
