A search for robbers, who bombed an ATM in Ramotswa in the early hours of today is ongoing.
In an interview, acting station commander of Ramotswa police, Assistant Superintendent Brendy Maila, said they feared that the perpetrators might have crossed into South Africa because their tracks were seen at an ungazetted point along the border.
Asst Supt Maila said the patrol team was alerted by a loud blast, which made them change from the normal routine patrol and headed towards Engen Filling station in Ramotswa.
He said as the police approached the scene, the unknown perpetrators opened fire and a shootout ensued. The suspects then fled under the cover of darkness following the shootout.
He added that a police van was hit in the process and about nine cartridges were recovered from the crime scene. Asst Supt Maila said preliminary investigations showed that there were about five men.
Meanwhile, Asst Supt Maila said as the search for the perpetrators continued, they were working closely with Stanbic Bank to establish if any cash was stolen. ends
