Construction of interconnected walkways between The Fields and Rail Park Mall is in progress.

MDSA project and construction manager, Mr Hennie Steyn said during a media tour Thursday, that the development would boost trade around the Central Business District (CBD) and make both malls easily accessible from either side.

Mr Steyn said the pedestrian tunnel that passed underneath the overpass was nearing completion with the construction of the walkway canopy set to be finished by month end.

He said they had agreed with the Gaborone City Council to create a taxi drop-off area at the back of the facility which led to a pedestrian walkway into the mall. 

Mr Steyn said the design concept of the mall was to have as much natural light coming into the mall and save on electrical costs.

He said the mall had about 650 parking spaces that were available above ground, with about 600 parking spaces in the basement. 

In addition, he said the parking system incorporated will afford shoppers an hour of free parking space, adding that beyond the free hour customers would be charged a standing fee per extra time.

“We have got most of the tenants scheduled to open shop end of August, these include some famous South African brands,” he said.  

Mr Steyn said that their external tenants would include a clinic, furnmart, laundry services, and water shop as well as a restaurant.

Stores at the mall include Woolworths, Edgars’, Pick n Pay, WestPack Lifestyle, Clicks, Pep Home, Apple Store, Mr Price Home, Mr Price Sport, Dischem, JB, Spar, Verimark, Doppio Zero, Milklane, and Chicken Licken.

He said about 35 shops were already in operation with at least 80 per cent set to open by month end. 

Moreover, the project manager said the mall had a kiddies' play area conveniently placed by the eatery section. The mall, he said, had a natural touch with brown-colour finishing and typically arranged architectural patterns like a computer motherboard, he stated. Ends
