Offical opening of the annual Ghanzi agricultural show is expected on July 29.

In an interview, Ghanzi Show Trust chairperson, Ms Gracious Soke, said they expected President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi to officially open the premier agricultural event.

Ms Soke said this year’s theme: Self-sufficiency and Sustainable Production of Basic Food, our Reset Agenda, was befitting as the nation intended to attain food security.

“Recently, government took a decision to ban importation of some food commodities in an effort to promote self-sufficiency,’’ she added.

Transitioning to ‘self-sufficiency and sustainable production of basic food’ she said was worth a shot particularly at a time when the world was trying to recover from COVID-19 blues, adding the pandemic had reversed gains on food security.

The chairperson said over 38 livestock exhibitors from Ghanzi region as well as Gabane, Gaborone, Sandveld, Kweneng, Molopo, Jwaneng and Tsabong would bring their best breeds.

Cattle judging will be on July 27 while judging of small stock as well as exhibiting stalls will be on July 28. 

Meanwhile, Ghanzi beauties will compete for the Miss Ghanzi show crownl on the night of July 28.

Livestock prize giving, livestock auctioning as well as cultural night will be held at Tautona lodge on July 29, where some traditional artistes would showcase their talents.

This cultural night, Ms Soke said, would be sponsored by the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture.

On Saturday there will be dog and horse racing and the day will be sealed with prize giving gala dinner at the community hall where BDF band is expected to perform.

Ms Soke said the Water Utilities Corporation was the platinum sponsor of this year’s show with Special Economic Zones Authority and Botswana Tourism Organisation as gold and silver sponsors respectively. 

Haskins, NARDI and Botswana Oil are the bronze sponsors.  ends
