Con men swindle woman of P9 000

A 62-year-old teacher was on Thursday swindled of P9 000 by men pretending to be police officers in Kanye.

In an interview with BOPA on Friday, Sejelo Police Station Commander, Superintendent Mogomotsi Matlapeng said the lady came in contact with the first con man in a parking space at Mahube Mall when she went out to inspect her car with the suspicion that someone might have scratched it.

Supt Matlapeng said the man approached her asking if he damaged her car but she realised that there was no damage, then he showed her a lot of money beside her car, which she told him was not hers.

The woman advised him to phone the police but he took the money and asked for a ride from her.

He said along the way a car with two men coming from behind stopped them and the occupants, pretending to be police men, asked where they got the money. He said the men then convinced the lady to give them her ATM card as well as the pin number and informed her to drive home, while they pretended to take the other man into custody.

Sejelo Police Station Commander said when the woman arrived home she realised that P9 000 was withdrawn from her account and went to report the case. “We blocked her card so that at least they do not take more money,” he said.

Supt Matlapeng said investigations were ongoing and appealed to the public to be always cautious of such criminals. He further advised the public to always ask for police identification card, adding that if not satisfied with identity they should immediately contact the police.

“Just phone us and tell us the names of the people you are with, in that way no one would be cheated by these criminals,” he said. Ends
