04 Nov 2013

Kgosi Sipho Mahlangu says knowing and understanding one’s culture is vital and culture should not be affected by modernity.

“It is our duty as traditional leaders to guard against issues of modernity affecting culture and we should make sure that cultural standards are not compromised,” Kgosi Mahlangu said when speaking on behalf of the Chairperson of the House of Traditional Leaders, South Africa,

He was speaking at the second annual Ntlo Ya Dikgosi Culture Day - an action-packed event which had attracted a sizeable number of people. Those who had attended the event were treated to a variety of traditional music and song by local groups such as Mafitlhakgosi, Ngwao Letshwao, Seragantshwana and Tlokweng Arrows.

Traditional food and attire were also the highlights of the Ntlo Ya Dikgosi Culture Day. The four string guitar maestro, Solly Sebotso, surprised many who had not seen him before when he performed his popular Morena Pidipidi song. The talented guitarist stole the event such that the director of ceremonies was forced to temper with the programme to accommodate Solly for a second performance.

Other activities of the culture day included poems, segaba and interactive traditional games such as diketo, mhele and koi. The purpose of the culture day was to raise funds for Ntlo Ya Dikgosi to enable the House to assist the less privileged members of society.

The event also aimed to celebrate diverse cultures existing in Botswana as well as to give the public an opportunity to interact with members of the Ntlo Ya Dikgosi. Ends
