Dikgosi elections breed conflict

03 Jul 2022

High incidents of Chieftainship disputes that continue to rock the institution have been blamed on elections.

It is to this end that Kgosi David Megano submitted before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Review of the Constitution during its recent meeting in Werda that elections for dikgosi should be abolished.

Kgosi Megano also proposed the creation of an independent body to preside over chieftainship disputes as opposed to the status quo where the portfolio minister was the one overseeing the process.

He called for expunging of Sections 77, 78 and 79 of the constitution saying they were discriminatory should be replaced legislation that promoted national unity.

Besides sharing most of Kgosi Megano’s sentiments, a representative for Werda, Mr Tuelo Kesenkile proposed that Kgalagadi District should be renamed Molopo.

He also wanted the government to give unemployed Batswana and aged above 45, a living allowance.

On DNA, Mr Abednico Motsumi suggested that every new born baby should undergo DNA testing to verify paternity.

Another resident, Mr Nettleton Mackenzie said the law should never countenance same sex marriages.

“Ke boleo, go raya gore magodu le bone batla a re ke tshwanelo ya bone gore ba utswe,” he argued.

Mr Joesph Louw who spoke on behalf of the Small Stock Association called for proper maintenance of the fence at the boarder which he said would go a long way preventing livestock going into the South African side of the boarder.

He suggested also that increasing incidents of stock theft called for the establishment of border patrols. ends
