Since the inception of the Bonno National Housing Programme, a total of four housing units have been completed and allocated to beneficiaries in Selebi Phikwe East.

Answering a question in Parliament on Tuesday, the Minister of Water and Human Settlement, Mr Onneetse Ramogapi said that during the current financial year, the ministry was expected to deliver an additional 21 housing units in the constituency, comprising two housing units under Bonno Home Improvement Housing Scheme and 19 under the Bonno Turnkey Development Housing Scheme.

With regard to partnership with private companies under the Bonno Targeted Housing Scheme, Mr Ramogapi said that no land had been made available for lease to private investors for housing development within the constituency.

This, he said, was mainly attributable to the acute shortage of available and serviceable land in the area.

“As a result, notwithstanding the interest expressed by private investors and government’s commitment to expanding the delivery of affordable housing through the Bonno Targeted Housing Scheme, implementation of the programme has not yet commenced within the constituency,” he said.

Mr Ramogapi said his ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, had purchased 1 226 former BCL mine houses as an interim measure to address the housing needs of Selebi Phikwe residents.

Mr Ramogapi was responding to a question from the Selebi Phikwe East MP, Mr Kgoberego Nkawana who had asked the minister to state the number of houses, which were built under the Bonno National Housing Programme and allocated for subsequent occupation in the Selebi Phikwe East constituency since the inception of the programme.
