Galeragwe retains CDC chairperson seat

 Central District Council (CDC) has retained Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) councillors Ketshwereng Galeragwe and Gabagopole Sebele, as its chairperson and vice chairperson respectively. 

Mr Galeragwe won by 103 votes against Outule Segolame of Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC)’s 66 votes during elections in Serowe on Thursday. 

The duo will lead for the next  two and half years. 

Sebele bagged 99 votes to be declared the vice chairperson against Councilor Thomas Kgethenyane of UDC, who obtained 70 votes.

There were four spoilt ballot papers. 

The CDC has 174 councillors, but only 173 cast their votes. 

Seven CDC sub-councils also elected chairpersons and deputies and other council committees. 

Serowe Sub-district council retained Councillor Lesedi Phuthego, who is a nominated councillor under BDP for the chair, defeating Councillor Amogelang Thaga of Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF).

Out of the 24 councillors, Cllr Phuthego was elected by 14 councillors while Cllr Thaga gained 10 votes. 

The third participant, nominated councillor Goabamang Sethaba got no vote.

Mr Phuthego is deputised by councillor Solomon Dikgang of BPF, who was unopposed after Cllr Bernard Kenosi pulled off the race.

Mahalapye Sub-district retained Cllrs Bontlhasetse Merementsi and Thebe Setlalekgosi as chairperson and deputy respectively. 

Bobirwa Sub-district elected Cllrs Kgomotso Mmereki chairperson and Thulaganyo Lucas his deputy. In Palapye Cllr Jordan Makhura was elected chairperson while Cllr Daniel Ookame became deputy. In Tutume, Mr Wabuya Chibani was retained as chairperson while Tonota Sub-council’s Christjan Machokoto and Boteti’s Molemi Galeragwe were unopposed as the chairman for their respective areas. 

In his acceptance speech, Mr Galeragwe expressed gratitude towards the councillors’ confidence over his leadership.

Mr Galeragwe encouraged councillors to work hard in come  up with sound and unique ideas which could take CDC to another level in terms of developments.

“Re tlaa batla ditsela tse re ka dirang gore khansele ya Legare e nne le letseno la madi ka tsone, tse di ka thusang mo ditlhabologong,’’ he said.

He said some of his key priorities included service delivery and implementation of projects in time to avoid costs. ends
