The South East District Council (SEDC) on Friday re-elected Mr Oshima Peloewetse as its chairperson for the next two and half years.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Peloewetse said his roadmap would be built around promoting local economic empowerment, enhancing service delivery, developing revenue generation strategies, as well as improvig sanitation, health and education sectors.
The road map was also aligned to President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi’s Reset Agenda, which was built on five development priority areas being digitalisation, value chain development, mindset change and alignment of the public service machinery as well as dealing with the effects of COVID-19 on Batswana.
“It is time we integrated the priorities in the Reset Agenda- into our plans and also developed and implemented initiatives that allow us to stay ahead so we can be the champions of this presidential agenda. However, implementation of these priority areas will come with a significant reform of the public service to not only embrace and adopt technology as a vehicle for service delivery, but will also require a new mindset and ability to manage change,” he said.
Mr Peloewetse told councillors that they had a mammoth task of developing the district into a vibrant economy that would enhance livelihoods.
He also said they should develop, promote and monitor systems and structures that would enable integrated service delivery in the district.
“I also wish to ensure that as district leadership we do not leave our community structures behind as the government looks towards private sector engagement for partnerships to deliver on jobs, equitable income distribution and poverty alleviation.
This will go a long way in moving towards the transformation agenda, which aims at uplifting the country to high-income status by 2036,” he said.
Mr Peloewetse urged councillors to become agents of change and to unlock new opportunities and areas of growth to drive the economy through the fourth industrial revolution (4IR).
He also urged them to reset and attest their commitment to building economic resilience in the district, as well as to work on modalities of improving revenue generation strategies. ENDS
