MMEWR launches anti-corruption policy
31 Oct 2013
The Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources (MMEWR) has developed an anti-corruption policy document.
The policy document on corruption prevention will act as a guiding document to MMEWR departments as well as stakeholders in handling fraudulent matters. This document outlined the ministry’s position in respect of fraud and corruption.
It also outlined strategic measures in place for the detection and prevention of such occurrences, and for fair dealing in matters pertaining to fraud and corruption.
Speaking at the policy document launch, on behalf of the minister, the MMEWR permanent secretary said fighting corruption was a national concern which required concerted efforts by all stakeholders.
Mr Boikobo Paya said the country required injections of investment for further growth and development, but high levels of corruption if left unattended, would scare away prospective and responsible investors.
He said investors often demanded certain conditions to be in place prior to entering into any agreement to invest in a country and some of these conditions include good governance and proven commitment to combating corruption.
“Our economic growth depends to a large extent on our real or perceived levels of corruption and we cannot afford to ignore these ratings. As a ministry, we can assist Botswana to eradicate corruption if we mainstream anti-corruption initiatives in our strategic intent,” said Mr Paya.
Meanwhile, some of the objectives of the MMEWR anti-corruption policy included fighting corruption in order not to jeopardize the rule of law and democracy and to provide guidance to employees on actions to be taken where they suspect any fraudulent or corruption activity. The other objective is to provide assurance that all fraudulent and corrupt activities will be fully investigated and appropriate action taken. ENDS
