Morupule mine to raise more revenue

Morupule Coal Mine aims to improve its revenue by the year 2027.

Briefing the media on Friday,May 20, the Morupule general manager Mr Edwin Elias said the mine aimed to raise revenue from P1 billion to P3 billion. This, he said would be attained by optimising current underground operations.

He explained that the mine would also optimise its fixed asset, which is the plant.

He also highlighted that more washed coal was expected from the Motheo project.

As for the availability of the product, Mr Elias said the resource was huge within the mining lease area of 42531.62 hectaers.

The coal mine general manager said they would ensure mining in a sustainable and efficient manner for a longer life span, which he said could be hundreds of years.

He also noted that coal from Morupule was comparable among the best in the world in terms of quality.

“Countries worldwide have great interest in sourcing Morupule coal. It is rated amongst the best,” he said.

On another matter, the general manager highlighted that the welfare of employees was a priority, hence capacity development remained key.

In terms of safety, Mr Elias said the mine had been doing well, given the fact that for a long time the mine’s operations were underground and the last fatality at the mine was 21 years ago, while injuries were last recorded nine years ago.

For her part, marketing and sales manager, Ms Kelebogile Seitei said Morupule mine was anticipating to end the year with 6 per cent above budget sales. She noted that Morupule had signed two contracts to export coal via Walvis Bay and Maputo.

Ms Seitei however said they have had challenges of supplying across borders due to COVID-19, a situation she said had now improved. Ends
