Botswana Development Cooperation drives industrialisation

Central District Councillors have called on Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) to consider investment opportunities in the district for economic benefits.
Following a virtual presentation by the BDC Strategy and Corporate Affairs Officer, Ms Boitshwarelo Lebang-Kgetse during the full council meeting on Thursday, councillors said the partnership with BDC was ideal to develop the central district looking at the available opportunities in the area which was also vast.
They cited developments that had been halted due to financial constraints, construction of malls in bigger villages where the council would benefit as well as opportunities in the agro-tourism, hotel and transportation sector.
Ms Lebang-Kgetse said that BDC was mandated to drive industrialisation of the country by providing financial assistance to investors with commercially viable projects.
‘’BDC provides both debt and equity financing to commercially viable projects to stimulate the private sector growth and foster linkages with the local and foreign investors, drive diversification and exports and create significant employment,’’ she stated.
Ms Lebang-Kgetse said the corporation invested in commercially viable projects in all sectors of the economy except large-scale mining.
‘’At governance level, BDC is directed by a board of directors appointed by the Minister of Trade and Industry, as the representative of the shareholder’’, she noted.
Further,she said that in appointing the members, the Minister placed emphasis on skills and expertise and attracted private business leaders, public sector executives as well as renowned practitioners in areas of specialities deemed critical for BDC’sstrategy.ENDS
