BSE market cap value at P391m

Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) equity market performance is valued at P391 billion pula for the period beginning January 5 to February 28, 2022.

Speaking at BSE March 2022 Opening Bell Ceremony in Gaborone Tuesday, BSE Head of Product Development, Mr Kopano Bolokwe said the figure represented 23 domestic and seven foreign listed companies respectively.

Thus far, he said BSE still had Botswana Building Societies Limited as the only company registered on their Serala Over-The-Counter Board.

In terms of the turnover, the BSE has traded P156.9 million, which translated into an average daily turnover of P4 million, he further said.

Moreover, Mr Bolokwe stated that local companies contributed 70.9 per cent to total equity turnover or P111.3 million while local individuals contributed 7.3 per cent during this period or P11.5 million to total equity turnover.

Foreign companies contributed 20 per cent or P31.4 million while foreign individuals contributed 1.7 per cent (P2.7 million) to total equity turnover, he said.

Mr Bolokwe stated that during this period, the number of shares traded equated to 44.2 million shares.

With respect to bond market, the value traded for government bonds during the period under review stood at P189.2 million while corporate bonds for the same period stood at P2.1 million, he added.

This meant that the total value of bonds traded stood at P191.3 million pula.

For the market capitalisation, government bonds were valued at P18.2 billion while corporate bonds were valued at P5.4 billion pula, said BSE Head of Product Development.

He said this brought the total bonds to market capitalisation to P23.6 billion.

In addition, Mr Bolokwe stated that the company had seven government bonds and 36 corporate bonds. ENDS
