Three students get scholarships
10 Feb 2022
Three University of Botswana students have earned scholarship from Stanbic Bank Botswana.
A press release from the bank states that the trio got the sponsorship through the bank’s transformation initiative which aims at bridging the youth employability gap and contribute towards Botswana’s transformation and innovation readiness.
The trio, Oaitse Tseleng, Maitumelo Radipodi and Timothy Ngwenya are studying block chain, data engineering and data science solution on Azure respectively.
The bank’s head of transformation, Ms Keamogetse Mpudi said the initiative lives up to its commitment of empowering youth.
She stated that the ambition and objective of the programme was to support youth and be part of their educational growth as well as the digital transformation of Botswana, helping inch closer towards a knowledge-based economy as espoused in Vision 2036.
“This is but one means through which we are living true to our purpose, Botswana is our home; we drive her growth. It is not only about transforming academic and vocational dreams into lasting realities, but in ushering the nation into its next chapter of progress. We are privileged to play a part in that mission,” she said.
Ms Mpudi said the bank continued to give youth platforms for future skills development as a way of cultivating their future and employment opportunities.
She said most recently, this had been demonstrated through the extensive investment in youth employability and entrepreneurship efforts through the Stanbic Bank Accelerate Incubator, as well as a number of academic sponsorship efforts.
“We want to play a meaningful role in supporting Botswana’s youth through educational growth and help deliver sustainable digital transformation. With Stanbic Bank, it can be, and we look forward to seeing these three youth demonstrate that in their next chapters,” said Ms Mpudi
Dr Tshiamo Motshegwa of the University Industry Government Co-creation Platform at University of Botswana, said as a premier institution of higher learning in Botswana, the University of Botswana’s mission was to take a leading role in the provision of quality education, research, innovation and engagement for sustainable national development and global impact.
Dr Motshegwa said the overall aim was to produce well rounded graduates with relevant knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve their true potential and personal fulfillment.
“The collaboration with Stanbic Bank Botswana goes a long way in helping the University of Botswana drive its new strategy of Creating a Future for the Knowledge-based Generation,” he said.
“The courses in this training programme will up-skill students with professional competencies required by market, thus bridging the gap between education and industry and giving the graduates a competitive edge for active participation in the digital transformation of Botswana,” said Dr Motshegwa.
