Audit backlog worries Trust members

06 Feb 2022

Sankoyo Tshwaragano Management Trust (STMT) members are unhappy with the organisation’s financial records that have not been audited since 2020. Speaking at the Trust’s annual general meeting recently, members held the view that the board lacked professionalism, hence their failure to engage an auditor for over two years.

They asked the board to explain why it took long to update financial records, adding that it was risky to run a public entity with pending audit.

They stated that unaudited financials were a breeding ground for corruption because some people might take advantage of such anomaly and misuse funds.
It was further highlighted that many people depended on the Trust to better their lives and therefore it was imperative that accounts were kept up to date.

They also implored the board to treat the Trust and its members with respect and be accountable whenever people sought clarification on its operations, particularly financial standings.

The Trust manager, Mr Galesenngwe Haku acknowledged the delay in auditing financials, something he attributed to internal issues and reasons he could not share with the meeting as well as the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, which restricted convening meetings. Nonetheless, Mr Haku promised members that all pending years would be audited so to have all financials up to date by 2023.

Again, he informed the meeting that the current board members, though their term had elapsed, would continue to serve so that they completed their assignments and vacate office, after which new members would be elected.

On the other hand, Mr Haku pleaded with the Trust’s staff to desist from sharing confidential information with the public. ENDS
