Sello strives for success

02 Feb 2022

Owner of the first ever coffee shop in  Serowe Ms Elizabeth Sello is determined to see her fledgling coffee shop being the preferred hang out spot in Serowe.

The 46-year-old, established The Burger and Coffee Shop after realising that most residents travel to Palapye to enjoy a simple cup of tea.

Ms Sello told BOPA that after completing Cambridge, she enrolled at a vocational teaching collage for a dressmaking course which opened her eyes to the fact that cooking was actually her first love.

She spends a good part of her time surfing the net in search of recipes to try out, perhaps because she has never been to a culinary school. Hers is sheer love for cooking which she says she is quite good at it.

The decision to open a coffee shop was so she puts her skill to good use and she has done precisely that as the main chef.

Now in its two months since take off, The Burger and Coffee Shop is promising to do more for its owner and Serowe residents.

It was established end of November last year, solely by Ms Sello and has added two employees to the establishment.

Prior to opening The Burger and Coffee Shop, Ms Sello said, she sold sweet potatoes in Serowe, a business she is still engaged in though run by her employees.

She said learning never ceased with cooking hence was always eager to learn new recipes and experiment with new dishes, to expand her menu that featured burgers, sandwiches, steak and chips, and an assortment of beverages mostly prepared by her.

Beverages range from cold drinks, non-alcoholic cocktails as well as hot drinks like cappuccino, mocha choca and tea.

Ms Sello explained that she had also tried to accommodate children in her menu by adding milkshakes and ice cream and was working on introducing a kiddies’ menu.

Like every other business, The Burger and Coffee Shop has its own challenges, the biggest being shortage and lack of ingredients which she said was bad for business.

“There are times when we cannot source lettuce in Serowe or any place nearby. This forces us to serve dishes without lettuce. The same goes for patties and ground beef used in burgers and sandwiches,” stated Ms Sello.

She said she resorted to making the patties herself with meat purchased from local stores , which has so far worked perfectly.

Another area she hoped to improve was the space from which she operated noting ‘It is too small. I intend on getting a bigger place once the business makes enough profit.’

Always planning ahead, Ms Sello wants to incorporate hosting children’s parties into the list of services she offers especially that she has realised that children love her place.

She intends to introduce jumping castles, to cater for her young customers.

Located along the main road at Mokgampho Complex, Mere Ward, The Burger and Coffee Shop is easy to locate and one can refer to its Facebook page for services on offer. ENDS
