A 61-year-old man appeared before Francistown magistrate court on Tuesday on charges of causing grievous bodily harm on his wife.
Moremi Buzwani of Mhakamme ward in Tonota is said to have used the butt of an axe to hit his wife, wounding her on the head and breaking her arm.
Inspector Kenneth Edward of Tonota police asked the court to remand the accused to allow the investigations to be conducted unhindered as the incident happened on Saturday night hence the matter was still fresh.
The Investigation Officer, Ms Toobona Ramogapi said after the incident, the accused fled the scene, forcing the police to search for him all night. She pleaded with the court not to release him because he was still a threat to his wife.
“The complainant is still shocked and traumatised by the incident, therefore they both should be given time to process what had happened,” she added.
Ms Ramogapi further said there was no guarantee that the accused would not repeat the offence if released.
When quizzed by Magistrate Thapelo Buang as to what could have caused him to take such extreme measures, the accused said his wife, who was under the influence of alcohol, insulted him, which angered him resulting in the incident.
The magistrate ordered that the accused remain in custody for 14 days and allow investigations to go on as well as to distance him from the complainant. ENDS
