Farmers markets vital for food security

08 Nov 2021

Farmers days have reportedly become important tools for reducing food insecurity as they increase food access in low income areas, support small farmers and local businesses.

A farmer and owner of Farmers Market brand, Ms Julia Farmer said with food insecurity heightened, the agricultural food supply chain at risk and the local economy devastated by business closures, farmers’ days could fill a critical health and economic gap.

In an interview recently, Ms Farmer said the main objective of market days was to promote the sale of locally produced and organic horticultural goods to the public.

She explained that her company offered local entrepreneurs an opportunity to showcase their products and services.

“I do not allow any second hand goods unless for charity, or mass produced goods, I also try to make sure that the products are environmental and animal friendly and also encourage the recycling and sale of unique and innovative products,” she said.

Ms Farmer said the farmers’ market advocated for the consumption of locally grown organic foods for healthy living, hence stalls selling health supplements and unhealthy products were limited, she said.

She also confirmed that it was a vital distribution channel for local growers and it also helped them meet the growing demand for locally produced food.

“At this time, with many people starting up their own businesses after losing their jobs, these markets have an important role in helping them get started,” she said.

Ms Farmer also called on the government to support local producers and ensure that their products were prioritised over imports. ENDS
