Smuggling of goods worrisome
24 Aug 2021
Tutume Police have expressed concern about the sale of alcohol, smuggled through ungazzeted entry points from Zimbabwe.
In an interview with BOPA on Tuesday, Tutume Police station commander, Assistant Superintendent Lesego Kgosiemang said although the government had banned the sale of alcohol, a weekend operation by the police and members of the Botswana Defence Force, deployed along the border line of Botswana and Zimbabwe revealed that a number of people were using ungazzetted entry points to smuggle alcohol into the country.
He said the hotspots were Dagwi, Maitengwe and Changate, which were along the border.
ASP Kgosiemang said upon spotting law enforcement officers, some perpetrators abandoned their goods and disappeared into the bushes.
He said they had found abandoned bicycles and wheelbarrows which were filled with alcohol.
He explained that these were an indication that the perpetrators either crossed on foot or used bicycles to carry the illegal goods.
He said they were still investigating and if found guilty, perpetrators would be liable to a fine of P5000. ENDS
