investigation officer pleads for more time

23 Aug 2021

The investigation officer into the over P8 million G4S security robbery has pleaded with the court for more time to further investigations.

Detective Sub Inspector Kagiso Molebatsi told Village Magistrate Court today that his team would need more time to make breakthrough into the matter.

Therefore, he said the accused person who was before the court, Moagabo Pelontle, should be remanded in custody because a search for five other suspects and stolen cash was still on.

He said should the court accede to granting the accused bail, it would diminish their chances of success. So far, he said, the investigation team had managed to recover over P900 000.

Detective Sub Inspector  Molebatsi said since the last court appearance, the investigating team had interviewed possible witnesses and was still to liaise with relevant stakeholders.

Detective Molebatsi classified the accused as a flight risk, saying during his arrest, the investigation team had received information that the accused was on his way to South Africa. The investigating officer further said the investigating team was hoping to arrest other suspects and recover stolen money.

However, the defence attorney, Mr Mompati Sepego accused the investigating officer for using the court processes to advance his investigations, while trampling on the rights of the accused.

He said in the previous court mention, the investigation officer had told the court that 14 days would be sufficient for his investigation, a statement which was vehemently denied by the investigating officer.

However, Magistrate Thedi Tshepo ruled that the accused be remanded in custody for further 14 days. He would appear again on September 9. The state was represented by Superintendent King Tshebo of Botswana Police Service.

The accused  person, acting with others who were not before the court, allegedly followed a G4S cash  transit vehicle, which was destined for loading cash at ATMs and robbed the security officers  at Block 6 Red Dot complex. They made made way with over P8 million. Ends.
