Court orders lashing of three men for assault

03 Aug 2021

Kgosi Simon Nkgageng of Tati Siding has expressed concern about the rising number of assault common cases in Ditladi village.

He said the village, which lies about nine kilometres east of Tonota, was seeing a rise in the number of male youths, who beat up their girlfriends and their male counterparts on suspicion that they were cheating on them or having affairs with their girlfriends.

Kgosi Nkgageng said in July, they registered three such cases. In one of them, Gofaone Motlalemetsi (24) assaulted his girlfriend Molobane Edwin on suspicion that she was cheating on him.

He was sentenced to three lashes after telling the court, in mitigation, that he was looking after his family’s cattle.  Kgosi Nkgageng said in another case, Oduetse Tahla (24) also received three lashes for assaulting Ms Kediemetse Coti on suspicion that she was cheating on him.

In mitigation, Tahla said he was not working and was looking after his family’s cattle and as such asked for leniency.  In yet another case, Ephraim Motsumi (32), assaulted his girlfriend Tshepiso Donald because boys were always propositioning her for love relationships. He was also given three strokes.

Kgosi Nkgageng also revealed that illegal selling of alcohol and cigarettes was rampant and also complained about alcohol and substance abuse by youth.

Meanwhile, he urged the residents to always wear their face masks properly, saying coronavirus cases were escalating daily.

He also complained about pupils, who roam the streets in groups without masks.  Bokhutlo
